OUGD406 - Speaking from experience

Concept -
My initial idea when first presented with the brief was to create a set of posters which would go in the new students rooms as when I first came to halls my room didn't really feel like home because I didn't have anything to put on my wall, felt like a prison cell sometimes. After giving my options some more though I went against designing a poster due to the fact its what has made up a large bulk of the work I produced this year.
My idea for this project was to produce a small zine style booklet that outlined how to be a graphic designer. I noticed quite a few people doing similar help books so I thought about taking the piss with the contents. I wanted to outline all the stereotypes of graphic designers and make something that would hopefully be funny.

Method of delivery -
I have been viewing lots of zines recently especially the more hand rendered ones, the was the starting point for how I wanted to present my speaking from experience.

Method of production -
I want to screen print my booklet and give it a really hand rendered appearance to go with the content, which much of it will be illustrated. considering the booklet is about graphic designers I feel it will add an ironic edge to it as you would think the book would be perfectly printed and bound.

Research -
I feel the layout of the book is an important thing if im including type on the pages, I have a few creative review books that I have been looking at because I feel they represent quite good layout design that I can copy or translate into something else.

I started by looking at some of the more illustrative zines on the internet, i like the use of minimal colour and the over lay of it with text, this is something I needed to consider if Im screen printing as I can use on 3 colours maximum really.

I picked up a few little booklets from my mum and off the internet to get a closer look. A zine i found was one produced by students at Manchester met called Owt, I really liked the hand made approach they had taken with the publication, I like the use of overlaid type on image and wanted to take my project in this sort of direction.

I picked up a couple publications from an illustrator called Joakim Ojanen, I really like his style of illustration and wacky imagination. I quite like how the books are produced, they have a nice quality about them. As I hope to have much of my content as illustration I have taken inspiration from these books.

The limo zine part of the book is a really long concertina fold out with a weird flowing scene on it, in my final book design I might want to think about producing a fold out page.

Production
When It came to producing my booklet the screen printing process was relatively easy and quick, I have taken it upon my self recently to be in the screen printing studio to produce some of my own personal work just to get back into the flow of things. I had trouble with the stock I was using because its wasn't quite big enough to accomodate for the screen I was using.

Final outcome....
